I was a mall cop for 13 years. We handled theft probably more than anything. If I was called to a store because someone was acting suspicious or in the process of stealing there was actually little that we could do. We couldn't physically stop them from stealing or chase them down to retrieve stolen merchandise. That is unless we actually saw them stealing. By law we were allowed to make a citizens arrest but I told my officers not to do that because we were not armed. I don't believe in going to a gun fight or a knife fight armed with nothing but a smile. We couldn't even talk to them or question them. One thing that I have found out over the years is that if a thief sees a uniform they will usually not steal. We were a deterrent to theft. If a thief walked into a store and the store staff didn't call us until they left the store with the product then I couldn't do a whole lot for them except follow the suspect and hope I could get a license plate number and description of the car to pass on to police. Many times thieves would use temporary tags which are hard to see, block their plates with something or not have any plates at all. The best deterence was to call us while the thief or thieves were still in the store.
After getting a description of the suspects I would do a walk through of the store. I tried not to look at the thieves because it didn't matter if I saw them. It was only important if they saw me. In most cases I could tell pretty quick who the thieves were. They would start grumbling under their breath or get very defensive. They wanted to know why I was there and why I was watching them. The store could be very crowded but they knew that I was there for them somehow. Many times if they were black I would be called a racist. Most times the suspect would leave in a huff very quickly once we were on the scene.. The bottom line is that they were mad because they couldn't steal. They acted guilty because they were guilty. If I was called to a store and the suspected thief barely noticed me or didn't make a scene I was pretty sure the store staff got it wrong. They probably weren't stealing. Watching Trump and Elon Musk exposing all of the graft and corruption reminds me of my days at the mall. The Democrats are like those thieves. They are mad because they have been exposed and they can't steal anymore. The guilty always cry the loudest.
