THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT

Image
GEORGE WASHINGTON WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON    Did you know that on March 4, 1793 George Washington gave the shortest inaugural speech in history? It consisted of 133 words. On March 4, 1841 William Henry Harrison gave the longest speech ever. The speech consisted of 8,443 words and lasted two hours. Harrison, however; served the shortest time as president. He died exactly one month later on April 4,1841 of pneumonia.

SILENT CAL

Image
CALVIN  COOLIDGE DOROTHY PARKER   Calvin Coolidge's nickname was "Silent Cal", because he was a man of very few words. Supposedly a woman once challenged him by saying that she would make a bet that she could get him to say more than two words. He leaned over and whispered in her ear, "you lose". An American poet and satirist, Dorothy Parker, was told that Coolidge had died. She asked "How can they tell"?

THINGS IN COMMON

Image
MILLARD FILMORE HARRY TRUMAN    Miillard Fillmore was our 13th president and Harry Truman was our 33rd president. Besides the fact that Fillmore is a dead ringer for Alec Baldwin he is considered one of our worst presidents. He was also the first of three "Doughface" presidents before the Civil War. A Doughface was a Northerner who would side with the South more often than they did with the North in a dispute. They were called Doughfaces to imply that they could be moldable or pliable. The aim of a Doughface was to help avoid a Civil War between North and South. Truman on the other hand was one of our greatest presidents in my opinion. Both Truman and Fillmore lacked a college education and besides this they share something unusual in common. Both turned down prestigious public awards that were offered to them. Millard Fillmore: When Oxford University offered to confer an honorary degree upon Fillmore, he refused, stating “I had not the advantage of a clas...

WHEN A SCRAPED KNEE ALMOST CHANGED HISTORY

Image
When President Dwight D. Eisenhower was 13 years old he scraped his knee and the knee became infected. Before antibiotics people routinely died of what was then called blood poisoning. The doctor told Dwight that if he didn't amputate his leg he could die. Dwight told him “I’d rather be dead than crippled and not able to play ball.”. Dwight held on to his leg and the infection eventually reached his crotch. Miraculously, however; his body was eventually able to fight off the infection. If Eisenhower had followed the doctor's advice there is no way that he could have entered West Point. By extension he would not have become Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during WW2. And he would not have been president of the United States.

THE 23rd OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

Image
Rutherford B. Hayes William McKinley Did you know that two future presidents served in the same military unit together for the entire Civil War? The unit was the 23rd Ohio Volunteer infantry and the presidents were Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley. Both served with distinction. Hayes was 21 years older than McKinley. He was born in 1822 and McKinley was born in 1843. Mckinley was only 18 when he enlisted as a private but by the end of the war, due to bravery and ingenuity, he had achieved the rank of Brevet Major. Hayes would eventually assume command of the regiment and finish the war as a Major General. The only major battle that the unit fought in was Antietam but they spent most of the war fighting against guerilla's and Confederate forces in the rugged mountainous terrain of West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Hayes would serve one term as president from 1877 to to 1881 and Mckinley served from 1897 to 1901 when he was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czol...

WHY ?

Image
Recently, I heard that Khalid Shiekh Mohammed will finally face justice in a military tribunal, which should have been done long ago. On this eighteenth anniversary of September 11th I have a question. Why is a man who was directly responsible for the deaths of 3,000 innocent people still breathing? Osama Bin Laden financed and helped plan the attack but this man, more than anyone else, did the actual leg work in carrying it out. We spent years looking for Bin Laden and when we found him we killed him. This man, however; has been in our possession since March of 2003, and actually confessed to his crime in March of 2007. Yet, I would venture to guess, because of so little attention paid to him in the press, that most Americans could not tell you who he is. As far as war criminals go, he is right up there with Heinrich Himmler, Martin Bormann, Adolph Eichmann, and Herman Goering. Both George W. Bush and Barack Obama had their chance to try this man but neither men did. Hopeful...

WHO ARE THE REAL LAWBREAKERS?

Image
Nikki and Ben Goeser THE SECOND AMENDMENT A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.   On most things the Founding Fathers got it right. There is nothing that I can disagree with in the Bill Of Rights. Many, if not most of the problems that America has experienced since 1791, when the Bill of Rights was ratified, can be traced to the fact that our government has not always upheld these rights. The Bill of Rights tells us what the government cannot do, not what it can do. Why is it that a state like California can restrict my right of self defense with a gun, but they cannot restrict my right to an attorney, or a jury trial, if I am caught with a gun in their state. There is a big difference between a law abiding citizen and a law breaker. In case you didn't know. Gun laws are only observed by law abiding citizens and only hurt law abiding citizens. This is why I oppose a...

DECISION TIME FOR SOCIAL MEDIA

Image
“WHOEVER WOULD OVERTHROW THE LIBERTY OF A NATION MUST BEGIN BY SUBDUING THE FREENESS OF SPEECH.” BENJAMIN FRANKLIN      In the span of a week I have been blocked twice by Facebook for the sin of expressing my political opinions. If I am not blocked again for writing this article I am sure that it will happen again very soon because I will not be bullied into silence. As Conservatives we make light of being thrown into Facebook Jail, but it is not a laughing matter with me. I know that this is all part of a greater collusion on the part of the left to silence Conservative thought. It happened in 2012 when Obama weaponized the IRS to silence Conservative groups in his reelection campaign. It happened again when he weaponized the FBI and CIA to go after Trump in 2016 and beyond. In that same year he also weaponized social media to shut down Conservative thought, which in the long run might have the most devastating consequences. All Americans, regardless of politi...
