THE WILLARD HOTEL

This is a picture that I took of the Willard Hotel lobby in Washington DC in 2003. President Grant, during the 1870's, would come the the lobby of the Willard to enjoy his cigars. Political office seekers and others would approach him and ask for appointments, jobs, or attempt to influence him on policy matters. This is where the term "lobbyist" originated.
